Did you know that domestic violence homicide is the second cause of death in pregnant women in our country? Abuse during pregnancy places women and unborn children at risk of severe physical and mental harm. According to the Family Violence Prevention Fund, one in 12 pregnant women is battered. Sadly, abuse often begins during pregnancy.
As victims often don’t report abuse due to shame or embarrassment, it is critical that the medical community, social services providers, neighbors and friends stay vigilant of potential warning signs to assist the victim and prevent the escalation of violence. Here what to look for:
· Jealousy and accusations of potential affairs
· Isolating the victim from family and friends
· Put downs and name calling
· Yelling and screaming at the victim
· Controlling behavior: victims must ask permission to use car or leave the house
· Constant harassing phone calls to check on the victim
· Threats to harm loved ones including pets
· Threats to commit suicide
· Physical restrain to stop the victim from living or calling 911
· Physical harm (pushing, showing, and hitting)
Please encourage the victim to seek help. The NOA’s 24 hour confidential number 706-864-1986 can provide victims with vital information and options to safely break free from domestic violence.
